Danny Worth proving to be an asset at second base – MLB Detroit Tigers News
Danny Worth will be a very pleased man these days. The 2012 season has provided him with enough opportunities to prove his mettle. After Detroit Tigers released former second baseman Brandon Inge last month, Worth got his first chance to become a permanent
member of Tigers’ Major League Baseball roster.
In his first few MLB appearances, Worth has given the fans plenty to cheer about. Tigers’ General Manager Dave Dombrowski and Manager Jim Leyland will also be very happy with what they have seen from second baseman so far.
In a game against Boston Red Sox on Wednesday, Worth displayed some top quality hitting skills. He drove in a run and a sacrifice fly and Leyland called it a nice game for Worth.
He showed even better composure on the plate the next game. Against one of the top starters in the American League, Josh Beckett, he lined a hit and run double to cap a three run third inning.
Worth has considerable amount of experience in Triple A league. He also appeared in 30 big league games last season but this year will provide him with an excellent opportunity to play over an extended stretch.
"When I'm playing every day in Triple-A, and the team has a day off, I feel out of whack the next day," Danny Worth said. "I have to get my swing back. It might take a few swings in the cage, or it might take a day.
"So to come up here and not play for a week straight or sometimes longer, it's tough."
"I think you're going to see a little more of Worth," manager Jim Leyland said Wednesday. "Give him a little shot and see what he can do. Why not?"
There is no denying the fact that he has unique hitting abilities but can he deliver the results in pressure situations is a question he will be eager to answer.
According to sources, Leyland has not confirmed that he will make Worth the full time second baseman. Perhaps, until the Tigers acquire a new second baseman, we will see Worth in Tigers’ colours.
