Darcy Tucker decides to hang them up
Darcy Tucker, a 15 -year National Hockey League veteran, has decided to hang them up. Tucker became a free agent in the off-season and did not receive any contract or pro try-out offers. Now moving into October with the regular season quickly approaching
Tucker has decided to call it quits.
Tucker was drafted 151st overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the sixth round of the 1993 NHL entry draft. The Alberta native joined Montreal for his first full NHL season in 1996-97. He would spend one full season with the Canadiens, before being
traded halfway through the 1997-98 campaign to the Tampa Bay Lightning. The right-winger would spend only one full season with the Lightning, scoring 21 goals and 43 points. This type of production caught the eye of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Tucker was traded
to the organization 50 games into the 1999-2000 season. Tucker enjoyed his most success while playing for the Leafs, spending eight years with the franchise. While in Toronto he would score over 20 goals four times and tallied over 50 points twice, having
his best year in 2005-06 when he notched 61.In 2008-09 Tucker signed with the Colorado Avalanche and finished his career with the club after the 2009-10 season.
Although Tucker had a propensity for scoring goals he will always be remembered as one of the League’s best agitators. The feisty winger had the ability to get under an opponent’s skin and racked up over 100 penalty minutes seven times in his career.
It is clear that Tucker most fondly remembers his time spent in Toronto. When he announced his retirement he spoke about his time as a Maple Leaf, saying. “It was difficult to play in Toronto, it wasn’t easy, but I took it as a compliment and I thrived on
it. I loved the pressure there.”
In 947 NHL games Tucker registered 215 goals and 476 points to go along with 1,410 penalty minutes.
