Daren Ganga dedicates Caribbean T20 win to late Joey Crew
Trinidad & Tobago received a warm welcome from the fans on their return home after emerging as Caribbean T20 champions.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Daren-Ganga-c52410, the triumphant skipper dedicated the achievement to the former Trinidad and Tobago captain Joey Crew, who passed away in January 2011 at the age of 73.
“When we heard about the passing of Joey Carew, we felt it was very important to pay respect to a man who changed the face of local cricket,” said Ganga. “There's no better way that we could have done it than to give him this send
off and dedicate this Caribbean T20 victory to him.”
Carew, the former Windies opener, debuted in June 1963 against England and went on to play 19 Tests before bidding farewell to the game in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/March-c74391 1972 compiling 1,127 runs at an average of 34.15. The left-hander had played 129 first-class
matches for Trinidad and Tobago and scored 7,810 runs averaging above 38.
The late Trinidad great also served the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 Cricket Board as selector for a few times before retiring from the post in 2006.
Trinidad and Tobago were without their two major players, Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard all through the tournament but still finished on top. And the credit goes to Lendl Simmons and Darren Bravo who have been pivotal in T&T's achievement.
Darren Bravo was declared as the Man of the Match in the final against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Hampshire-c789 which T&T won by 36 runs. Bravo said that he really enjoyed playing in the tournament.
“I was feeling good at the crease and the ball was coming off the bat quite nicely,” said Bravo. “I have been doing a lot of work on my game and it was really a continuation from the way I started my Test career in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758.”
Simmons finished second-highest run scorer in the tournament with a tally of 249 runs just behind Marlon Samuels of Jamaica who led the chart with 253 runs. Simmon’s 249 included three half-centuries and was adjudged as the player
of the series for his stellar performance.
“I am really working hard to get better and better at my game,” said Simmons, struggling for a place in the national side since February 2010. Simmons was quite happy with his performance in the WICB Twenty20 tournament and said that
his next target is to get runs under his belt in the four-day format as well to press his claims for a way back to the national team.
Ganga is now eying the Champions League 2011 and has urged his side to give their best to ensure that the result would be much better than the inaugural edition in 2009.
“The journey has now begun,” Ganga said. “I urge every single supporter of T&T cricket to step forward and ensure that Champions League 2011 is one step better than Champions League 2009. This time around, we're not first-timers.”
