Daren Liew moves into quarter-finals of Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold – Badminton News
The Men’s singles shuttler Daren Liew kept Malaysia’s hopes alive by moving into the quarter-finals of Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold on March 15, 2012.
The World Number 37 shuttler Daren Liew ensured his presence in top eight men shuttlers by overpowering Pedro Martins of Portugal in third round match of the event.
The Malaysian has an even bigger challenge ahead as he is going to lock horns with the World Number five Chinese maestro Chen Jin in the quarter-finals.
Daren has been in a supreme touch after the recent All-England trip and he continued his journey to success by passing a three set pre quarter-finals test with impressive figures of 19-21, 21-13 and 21-10.
The 61-minute battle was a test of physical and mental strength which Daren cleared by edging his rival in last two sets of the match.
In opening game, his rival Pedro Martins gave him a strong competition and matched his skills by stepping forward constantly on the score board. The Portuguese shuttler had a decisive leap on the game point position and left Daren Liew behind with the concluding
first set score of 21-19.
However, this first set loss did not harm the Malaysian as he stormed back into the match with his gutsy performance in following game.
The 25-year-old Daren was class act in second set as he outclassed his rival technically and tactically. His opponent Pedro Martins made several mistakes and he pocketed the full benefits of his rival’s deficiency.
The singles expert Daren excelled on the score board with a significant 8 points lead over his opponent. He ended second set with final figure 21-13 in his favour.
The last segment of the show was supposed to be a tough trial for both shuttlers as they were levelled 1-1 in match score position but it turned into one-sided game. The Malaysian shuttler stole the show by registering a notable margin of 21-10 in the decisive
third set.
The spirit is high so are the expectations after this impressive 2-1 victory and he will surely utilise his self-confidence, he earned through his recent success, to register his mark in the quarter-final against Chen Jin of China.
