Daren Liew ready to show strong character against Denmark at Thomas Cup Finals – Badminton news
Malaysia’s elite shuttler Daren Liew is determined to show a strong character against Danish opposition at the Thomas Cup Finals 2012 on Tuesday, May 22, in China.
The World Number 33 Daren, who was impressive in his yesterday’s fight against South Africa’s Willem Viljoen, remains gritty to continue his winning run against Denmark on his debut in Thomas Cup Finals which is the biggest team-event championship.
Daren is expected to play against his higher ranked rival Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark in the second Men’s Singles contest in this team-event competition between Malaysia and Denmark.
The young Daren has been playing incredible badminton for the last few months and have reached into Men’s Singles quarter-final in All England Open earlier this year.
Now, he wants to prove his worth in his first Thomas Cup Finals and is ready to take Jorgensen in today’s fight.
Daren wants to remain pressure free while playing against Jorgensen who has improved a lot after their previous meeting when both of them were junior shuttlers.
The Malaysian shuttler said, “Jan has improved a lot since I played him once in a junior tournament. He is more steady and calm unlike before when he gets frustrated easily.”
He further added, “I am the underdog. Nothing was expected from me at the All-England and Swiss Open and I reached the quarter-finals. I will play without any pressure and try to win.”
In his yesterday’s fight against South Africa’s Willem, the Malaysian was in fully commanding position as he did not show any mercy in the court and easily wrapped up victory in straight games with a one-sided score of 21-11 and 21-9 by taking just 24 minutes
in the court.
Malaysia needs to win against Denmark in order to remain at the top in Group C and it they do, they will have an easy match at the quarter-final stage and there target to reach into the semi-final will become easy to achieve.
Daren is confident to put up good show and is determined to defeat Jan O Jorgensen who is currently number 13 in Men’s Singles world standings.
