Daren Liew stuns Jan O Jorgensen in Men’s Singles fight at Thomas Cup Finals 2012
Malaysia’s Daren Liew defied all odds and proved his mettle when he thrashes his higher ranked challenger Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark in Men’s Singles clash at the Thomas Cup Finals 2012 in China, on Tuesday, May 22.
However, Malaysia lost this team event competition to Denmark with a tight 2-3 margin on the board because of the unexpected injury of Lee Chong Wei who withdrew against Peter Hoeg Gade.
Daren, who is World Number 33 in Men’s Singles category, put up superb show and gave a shocking treatment to Jorgensen who has been place at number 13 in the world.
The lower ranked Daren delivered a gutsy performance and toppled his Danish rival in straight games by working hard for just 34 minutes in the court.
After the fight, a delighted Daren said that he is satisfied with what he did in the court especially when Malaysia lost the opening both fights and was 0-2 down against Denmark.
He said, “I actually thought I would be playing with Malaysia leading 2-0. Instead, it was the reverse! I am glad I saved a match for Malaysia. Jan played badly and it helped. To win a point in my first Finals under such pressure is really a breakthrough
for me.”
He further added, “It will surely boost my confidence. Chong Wei’s injury gave me the motivation to win. I did not want us to lose easily and I fought on.”
In the fight against Jorgensen, Daren found a perfect start when he showed his remarkable skills and took a reasonable lead until the one-minute break in the opening set.
After the break, the Malaysian remained on track and did not spare any chance for Jorgensen to take over the control of rallies.
The lower ranked Malaysian ended the opening set easily with a convincing score of 21-15.
In the second game, Jorgensen tried to inject more speed in his shots but failed to dominate the pace as his lower ranked opponent was very quick in the court.
Daren remained on track throughout the competition in the second game and wrapped it up in an elevated fashion by a one-sided score of 21-13.
The impressive Malaysian won this Men’s Singles battle in just 34 minutes with a terrific margin of 21-15 and 21-13.
