Daren Liew stuns Lee Hyun Il in Men’s Singles second round of the 2011 Chinese Taipei Open
Darren Liew, the most talented back-up shuttler of Malaysia has made the biggest upset in the event so far, when he stunned World Number 13, Lee Hyun Il of Korea in the Men’s Singles second round of the 2011 Chinese Taipei Open, at Sinjhuang City, on Thursday,
September 8.
Daren has been working hard with dedication and commitment for the last few months to get a much needed breakthrough at the international level. In his match against the higher ranked and experience opponent, the Malaysian delivered a terrific performance
indicating that he has also achieved a certain level of badminton skills.
Lee Hyun, who was the third seed in the Men’s Singles draw of the event, failed to tackle the attacking game of the spirited Malaysian, who was not sparing even a single chance to score points. Daren took 53 minutes to beat his senior opponent in a rubber-game
fight which entertained the huge local crowd to the maximum.
In the first game, both players were neck-to-neck until the opening half ended. However, after the break, Daren injected more power into his strokes and became fast to dominate the game at the net. He remained successful in winning the opening game with
the margin of 21-17, in 20 minutes.
The second game was a complete reversal of the opening set as Lee Hyun found his momentum and played a different game. Daren worked really hard to tackle the perfectly placed shots of the Korean but failed to dominate the game. The unforced mistakes of the
Malaysian cost him as he lost the second game with the margin of 16-21, in 19 minutes.
Daren started the deciding set in a passionate manner, as he hit many smashes in one rally. His aggression worked really well as his challenger got into a defensive position. The Malaysian continued his positive and fast power-play and won the final set
with an inspiring margin of 21-12, in just 14 minutes. This interesting fight of 53 minutes finished off with a 21-17, 16-21 and 21-12 margin.
