Daren Liew topples Arif Ramadhan in Men’s Singles second round of the 2011 Vietnam Open Grand Prix
Malaysia’s national shuttler, Daren Liew entered into the Men’s Singles third round as he toppled Indonesia’s Arif Ramadhan in the second round of the 2011 Vietnam Open Grand Prix, in Vietnam, on Wednesday, August 24.
Daren is currently ranked at number two in Malaysia in the Men’s Singles category and is placed at number 11 in Men’s Singles draw in the Vietnam Open. He played tremendous badminton in the second round match against Ramadhan, who was a little nervous while
playing against the experienced Malaysian. Daren took 37 minutes to thrash the lower ranked Indonesian in a straight-set battle.
In the first set of the match, Daren opened his campaign against the Indonesian in a confident way as he progressed without facing any considerable resistance from his opponent. Until the interval, the Malaysia reached at 11-6.
After the break, the Malaysian continued playing in the same aggressive manner and spared no chance for Ramadhan to fight back in the game. The perfect shot placement and fast speed were the major elements in the Malaysians game, which helped him in winning
the opening game with a wonderful margin of 21-12, in 16 minutes.
The second set was thrilling, where the Indonesian lifted up his level of play and matched the speed and accuracy of the Malaysian. Ramadhan played to his maximum speed in this set of the match and remained successful in remaining close to his higher ranked
opponent. The score remained tight until the interval in the second game and the Indonesian was slightly behind Daren at 9-11.
After taking one-minute break, the Malaysian changed his strategy and started to play pushes and net shots. He avoided lifting the bird high which disturbed the flow of Ramadhan, who was playing well from the rear court area.
Daren played an attacking game throughout the final half of the second game and ended it in 21 minutes with the margin of 21-17. The Malaysian won the battle in straight sets with a score of 21-12 and 21-17.
