Darian Townsend claims Men’s 200m IM gold: Day three – Mutual of Omaha Swimvitational
Darian Townsend of Tucson Ford Deal claimed gold medal of the Men’s 200m Individual Medley (IM) on day three of the 2012 Mutual of Omaha Swimvitational in Nebraska on Sunday, June 10.
The 27-year-old Townsend remained in a comfortable lead over his challengers from the start of the event and served notice of his talent by occupying gold medal of the discipline.
Townsend, who qualified into the final as top fastest swimmer, sustained his pace in the playoff and reached the podium for gold medal by clocking a time of 2 minutes and 01.35 seconds.
The champion remained nearly five seconds faster from Michael Weiss of Wisconsin Aquatics, who followed him on the finishing end for silver medal by submitting a time of 2 minutes and 06.97 seconds.
Third spot of the discipline was secured by Joe Rodgers of Oakland University, who stayed 0.96 seconds apart and settled on the finishing blockade with the timing of 2 minutes and 07.93 seconds.
Rodgers was chased by Connor Nolan of University of Missouri, who stayed almost full body length behind and made his way to the finishing end as fourth fastest swimmer with an effort of 2 minutes and 08.96 seconds.
Fifth position of the discipline was secured by Scott Gunter of Cardinal Aquatics-KY, who was only 0.72 seconds apart and posted an effort of 2 minutes and 09.68 seconds.
Similarly, Gunter remained just 0.04 seconds faster from Andrew Jovanovic of NASA Wildcat Aquatics, who finished sixth in the discipline by clocking an effort of 2 minutes and 09.72 seconds.
The 17-year-old Jovanovic was chased by Brandon Hatanaka of Una LOVE-CO, who stayed 0.60 seconds apart and hit the finishing end with an effort of 2 minutes and 10.32 seconds for seventh position.
Eighth position of the IM event was secured by Jacob Molacek of Greater Omaha Aquatics, who stayed only a half body length slower and reported a time of 2 minutes and 11.00 seconds.
The competition is of considerable importance as it precedes the 2012 London Olympic Games while the position holders received medal at the prize distribution ceremony of the session.
