Darian Townsend clinches Men’s 200m IM gold – FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup
Darian Townsend of South Africa clinched gold medal of the Men’s 200m Individual Medley (IM) on second day of the 2012 FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup in Stockholm, Sweden on Sunday, October 14.
The South African swimmer, who accomplished gold medal of the 200m freestyle earlier at the championship, continued his nerve wrecking form in the 200m IM and embraced victory.
Townsend faced strong resistance from the Hungarian veteran, Laszlo Cseh throughout the race but with his persistent efforts, he succeeded in edging him out over the finishing wall for gold medal.
He was just an inch ahead of his toughest competitor and occupied gold medal of the event by producing a time of 1 minute and 53.66 seconds.
The champion was chased by Cseh, who was only 0.02 seconds slower from his foregoing finisher and surfaced on the wall with an effort of 1 minute and 53.68 seconds.
The second position holder was trailed by Henrique Rodrigues of Brazil, who stayed one and a half body length slower from overpowering his former finisher and touched the wall with an effort of 1 minute and 55.15 seconds.
Fourth position of the race was obtained by Simon Sjodin of Sweden, who was almost two body lengths slower from his preceding swimmer and touched the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 56.91 seconds.
Sjodin was trailed by Gal Nevo of Israel, who suffered a deficit of 0.34 seconds from fourth position holder and ended his race in fifth place by clocking an effort of 1 minute and 57.25 seconds.
Sixth position of the event was obtained by Thiago Simon of Brazil, who remained 1.04 seconds apart and posted a time of 1 minute and 58.29 seconds.
Subsequently, Simon was followed by Linus Kanth, who was three body lengths apart touched the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 01.53 seconds.
Eighth position of the race was obtained by Diogo Yabe of Brazil, who ended his race in a time of 2 minutes and 02.30 seconds.
Furthermore, Townsend was overjoyed with his second gold winning effort and collected his award after the race.
