Darian Townsend earns Men's 200m freestyle gold medal: Day one – 2011 Pro Dual Meet 1
Darian R Townsend displayed his tremendous efforts by earning gold medal of Men's 200m freestyle on opening day of the 2011 Pro Dual Meet 1, on Wednesday, November 16. The meet is a two day competition and is taking place at the University of Michigan Pool.
The 27-year-old Townsend met the expectations of his fans by clinching his second gold medal of the evening. Previously, he claimed the title of Men's 200m Individual Medley (IM), which was the opening event of the session.
West's Townsend remained third fastest swimmer in first half of the swim. He followed the lead of Jean Basson of East and Charles G Houchin of West. Basson was the fastest swimmer in the first lap, where he clocked a time of 26.30 seconds while Houchin remained
second fastest swimmer, posting an effort of 26.35 seconds.
They were followed by Townsend, who ended his initial lap in a third fastest time of 26.42 seconds. In the second lap, Basson and Houchin continued their dominating efforts and completed their second round with timings of 54.30 and 54.48 seconds, respectively.
They were chased by Townsend who remained third finest swimmer as he concluded his lap in a time of 54.94 seconds.
The tables turned in the third lap, where Houchin gained a marginal lead over his competitors and ended his round with a top ranked time of 1 minute and 22.63 seconds. Basson remained 0.20 seconds slower than him and reported an effort of 1 minute and 22.83
seconds while Townsend ended third with a timing of 1 minute and 22.89 seconds.
Meanwhile, Townsend elevated his efforts in the final lap and reported a time of 1 minute and 50.14 seconds for gold medal. With his astounding efforts, he out-touched Houchin with a difference of only 0.01 seconds. Houchin produced an effort of 1 minute
and 50.15 seconds for silver medal.
The third spot was secured by Basson, who reached the podium with a timing of 1 minute and 50.84 seconds.
In addition, these podium finishers were invited on the victory stand for awards and accolades after the completion of session.
