Darian Townsend earns Men’s 200m IM gold – FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup
Darian Townsend of South Africa earned gold medal of the Men’s 200m Individual Medley (IM) on second day of the 2012 FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup in Doha, Qatar on Sunday, October 7.
The South African swimmer stifled hopes of his opponents in the eight-lap discipline and cruised his way towards the wall for gold medal.
He experienced strong resistance from Laszlo Cseh of Hungary in the race but with his impressive skills, Townsend managed to edge him out over the wall for gold medal.
He remained just an inch ahead of his closest rival and earned his way to the top of podium by clocking a time of 1 minute and 53.75 seconds.
The gold medallist was trailed by Cseh, who was 0.10 seconds behind and surfaced on the wall for second position by producing an effort of 1 minute and 53.85 seconds.
The second position holder was followed by Daiya Seto of Japan, who stayed full body length slower from his foregoing finisher and touched the wall for bronze medal with an effort of 1 minute and 54.78 seconds.
Seto was followed by Simon Sjoedin of Sweden, who remained four body lengths apart and settled on the wall with an effort of 1 minute and 58.77 seconds for fourth position.
Subsequently, Sjoedin enjoyed an advantage of nearly five minutes over Kai Wai David Wong of Hong Kong, who sprinted his way towards the finishing wall for fifth position by producing an effort of 2 minutes and 03.70 seconds.
Sixth spot of the event was obtained by Gergo Kis of Hungary, who was 1.34 seconds apart and transpired on the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 05.04 seconds.
Kis was traced by Chun Nam Derick Ng of Hong Kong, who remained 0.32 seconds apart and posted a time of 2 minutes and 05.36 seconds for seventh position.
Ng was chased by Sheng Jun Pang of Singapore, who was almost 10 metres slower behind and clocked an effort of 2 minutes and 10.87 seconds for eighth spot.
Furthermore, Townsend was happy with his performance and raked medal after the event.
