Darian Townsend pockets Men’s 200m IM gold: Day three – 2012 Columbus Grand Prix
Darian Townsend of Tucson Ford Deal claimed gold medal of the Men’s 200m Individual Medley (IM) on concluding day of the 2012 Columbus Grand Prix at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on Sunday, March 11.
The 27-year-old Townsend dictated terms to his opponents from the beginning and remained prominent for the top finishing spot of the race.
He was the first swimmer to jump off from the starting blocks. With his dazzling performance, he ended his first half of the race in a time of 25.63 seconds. He was followed by Chase T Kalisz of North Baltimore, who stayed almost 1.50 seconds slower from
him and ended his first lap with the timing of 27.11 seconds.
The same continued in second lap, where Townsend extended his lead to 2.42 seconds and ended his initial 100 metres of the race by posting a time of 56.20 seconds. With his continuous efforts, he remained almost one body length ahead of 18-year-old Kalisz,
who covered the same distance by posting a time of 58.62 seconds.
Townsend continued his ruthless aggression in the third lap and completed his 150 metres of the swim by touching the wall in a time of 1 minute and 32.26 seconds. He was trailed by Kalisz, who was 0.71 seconds away from him and ended his third lap in a time
of 1 minute and 32.97 seconds.
With his immaculate efforts in the final lap, Townsend went full throttle towards the finishing end and completed his race in a time of 2 minutes and 00.72 seconds for gold medal. He was trailed by Kalisz, who remained 1.25 seconds slower from his foregoing
finisher and followed him on the medal rostrum for silver medal by producing a time of 2 minutes and 01.97 seconds.
Subsequently, David Verraszto of Hungary seized third finest spot of the event as he surfaced on the finishing end by producing a time of 2 minutes and 02.20 seconds.
Furthermore, the championship completed after the conclusion of all swimming events while the winners received medals and accolades for their invincible efforts at the prize distribution ceremony of the championship.
