Darian Townsend seizes Men’s 200m freestyle gold – FINA Swimming World Cup, Tokyo
Darian Townsend of South Africa seized gold medal of the Men’s 200m freestyle on day two of the seventh stop of the 2012 FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup Series in Tokyo, Japan on Wednesday, November 7.
The South African swimmer smothered hopes of his opponents in the eight-lap discipline as he showed his urgency towards the finishing wall for gold medal.
With his commendable form, Townsend remained half a body length ahead of his closest competitor and surfaced on the finishing end as top fastest swimmer by producing a time off 1 minute and 43.31 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by Robert Hurley of Australia, who stayed 0.62 seconds slower from his foregoing finisher and surfaced on the finishing end as silver medallist by producing a time of 1 minute and 43.93 seconds.
Hurley was trailed by Tommaso D’Orsogna of Australia, who was 0.56 seconds behind and surfaced on the finishing end as third position holder by reporting a time of 1 minute and 44.49 seconds.
D’Orsogna was traced by Cameron McEvoy of Australia, who tried hard to secure his spot on the podium but settled on the wall as fourth best finisher by clocking an effort of 1 minute 45.13 seconds.
McEvoy was chased by Yuuki Kobori of Japan, who stayed only 0.21 seconds slower from upsetting his former finisher and transpired on the finishing end for fifth position by clocking an effort of 1 minute and 45.34 seconds.
Sixth position of the race was secured by Dominik Meichtry of Switzerland, who remained 0.66 seconds behind and tapped the wall with an effort of 1 minute and 46.00 seconds.
Meichtry was followed by Ieuan Lloyd of Great Britain, who was 0.61 seconds apart and tapped the wall with an effort of 1 minute and 46.61 seconds for seventh position.
Eighth position of the race was obtained by Matthew Stanley of New Zealand, who remained 1.11 seconds slower and transpired on the finishing wall with an effort of 1 minute and 47.72 seconds
Furthermore, Townsend was contented with his gold finish and received medal at the prize ceremony of the event.
