Darian Townsend wins Men’s 200m freestyle gold – FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup
Darian Townsend of South Africa won gold medal of the Men’s 200m freestyle on second day of the 2012 FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup in Stockholm, Sweden on Sunday, October 14.
The South African swimmer demonstrated his astonishing efforts in the eight-lap freestyle discipline and made his way towards the finishing end for gold medal.
Townsend faced strong contest from his following swimmer but with his unrelenting efforts, he managed to prove his mettle for the crown. He remained just a stroke ahead of his closest competitor and touched the wall with a wonderful timing of 1 minute and
43.45 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by Robert Hurley of Australia, who was 0.22 seconds apart and emerged on the wall with a timing of 1 minute and 43.67 seconds.
Hurley was faced by Tommaso D’Orsogna of Australia, who stayed more than a body length behind and emerged on the wall for bronze medal with an effort of 1 minute and 44.89 seconds.
The third position holder was followed by Paul Biedermann of Germany, who was 0.81 seconds slower and settled on the wall as fourth best finisher with an effort of 1 minute and 45.70 seconds.
Fifth position of the event was obtained by Kyle Richardson of Australia, who stayed 0.34 seconds apart and transpired on the finishing blockade with the timing of 1 minute 46.04 seconds.
Richardson was traced by Fernando Santos of Brazil, who suffered a loss of only 0.04 seconds and finished sixth in the race by producing an effort of 1 minute and 46.08 seconds.
Santos was trailed by Thiago Simon of Brazil, who remained 0.16 seconds slower and clocked a time of 1 minute and 46.24 seconds for seventh position.
Last spot of the race was obtained by Artem Lobuzov of Russia, who was unable to overpower any of his competitors and stayed considerably slower from Simon. Lobuzov stayed 1.09 seconds slower and emerged on the wall with a timing of 1 minute and 47.33 seconds.
In addition, Townsend was delighted with his gold claiming effort in the discipline and raked medal after the event.
