Darien High School boys volleyball team defeats Newington North by 3-2 in state championship final
Darien High School boys volleyball team was able to defeat Newington North on Friday in the final of the state championship played at Fairfield Warde.
As expected, the match between the two teams was thrilling and went on to five competitive sets at the end of which the set scores stood at the following points: 23-25, 25-17, 18-25, 25-22 and 15-11.
Despite that fact, the Newington could not achieve a win; they did not go down without putting up a commendable fight. The first set was won by Newington after a tough struggle for dominance whereas the Blue Waves were successful in securing the second one.
Newington responded by taking the fifth set for their own and the match was brought to a deciding fifth as the Blue Waves bagged a fourth set victory. The final set of the match had all the excitement that the fifth set of the final should, with the Blue Waves
sealing the deal on it in the end at 15-11.
Austin Cockerill, the senior leader for the Blue Waves expressed his jubilation in the following words after his team had won the final of the CIAC Class M championship, “It just feels awesome. First FCIAC championship this year, second state championship.
It took a lot of work, a lot of hours in the gym. It all paid off.”
Blue Waves have much to be proud of as they have been able to scrap off a spectacular win and finish their season with a total number of 22 victories and only one defeat.
The start of the first set saw both Darien as well as Newington come out strong in order to assert their dominance. The entire opening set went back and forth between the two teams with no one sure where the tables would turn till the very end. However,
it was Newington that was able to seal the deal by bagging the initial set of the game at 25-23.
The Blue Waves did not let matter get out of their hands and stepped up their game in the second set. As a result, Newington was hard put to stop the Blue Waves from taking the second at 25-17.
With the match at a tie position, the third set became important to increase pressure on the other team. Therefore, what followed was an exciting battle across the net between both Darien and Newington. However, it was Newington that took the lead in the
middle stages of the set at 16-8. The Blue Waves were able to close in the gap but Newington pulled away to grab the third set at 25-18.
The fourth set started off with Newington willing to end the match while the Blue Waves were determined to take it to the fifth. Darien stood successful in winning the set at 25-22 and bringing the match to the deciding fifth set.
After the Blue Waves got the lead at 5-2 in the fifth set of the game, they kept on extending their advantage until Darien had won the final set at 15-11.
