Darien High School defeats Fermi in State semi-final: High School Volleyball
Darien High School boys volleyball team was able to defeat Fermi on Tuesday by 3-0 in the State Volleyball tournament semi-final. By winning the match, the Blue Wave has been able to move on to the state finals and will be competing for this year state crown.
The Class M semi final that took place at Oxford High between Fermi and Blue Wave was fairly one-sided. Each of the three sets was won by the Blue Wave in dominating fashion. By the time that the Blue Waves were done, the final set scores stood at 25-14,
25-17 and 25-19.
In contrast to the overall season record of the Blue Wave, the season statistics for Fermi are lacking. They have 15 wins while incurring five defeats.
Alexandra Pyznar, the coach of the Fermi team, commented on the Garien squad and said, "They came out swinging and they have some really tough hitters. We came into it knowing they were going to be tough.”
Against the brutal onslaught of the Blue Wave, Fermi could not put up an appropriate response. But some Fermi players kept together the tumbling defense and attack of their team. The players that showed some fight include Cody Brown, Josh Cheney and Greg
Zaylor. Brown was able to lead his team by making a total of 20 assists whereas Cheney kept the scoreboard ticking by posting seven kills. Cheney was also able to help by adding five digs. Zaylor made his presence felt by contributing six kills of his own
that were supported by three blocks.
On the Darien side, the player that was most effective was Calder Billhart, who was able to post 13 kills through the entire match. Not only that, he kept Fermi under pressure by making another 13 points on serves with three more coming in from aces. Apart
from Billhart, Sam Bryan added to the Blue Wave onslaught by registering 11 kills of his own as well as three digs.
The number one ranked Darien team has a lot to be confident about and they will make sure that the Blue Wave puts up an awful lot of competition on Friday at Fairfield Warde High. The team next in line for the Blue Wave is the number three ranked Newington
who are coming into the finals with a total number of 17 victories in this season so far. These wins have been bagged at the expense of suffering three loses. The number of times that the Blue Wave has earned themselves a win equals to be 19 now. These victories
have been secured after having suffered only one loss in the entire season.
