Darius Miller leads as Kentucky Wildcats beats Old Dominion Monarchs 62-52: NCAA Basketball Recap
Darius Miller came off bench with 13 points, five assists and four rebounds to lift Kentucky Wildcats to a 62-52 victory over Old Dominion Monarchs on November 20 at the Mohegan Sun Arena, Uncasville. Miller ended on 4 for 8 shooting
from the field and a perfect 5 for 5 from free throw line.
"We got out of here alive somehow, and the reason we got out of alive is because Darius played," Kentucky coach John Calipari said. "If he didn't play, we'd probably get beat by 10 or 12."
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist also racked up 13 points on a 6 for 13 shooting from the floor and also grabbed nine rebounds in nearly 34 minutes of action. Forward Anthony Davis was also spectacular. He nearly missed a double-double with
11 points, nine rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
Chris Cooper was the man who led the Monarch. He recorded a double-double, pouring in a game-high 17 points to go along with 12 rebounds. Trian Iliadis posted 11 points while Kent Bazemore ended with 10 points, four steals and
four rebounds.
Kentucky hit 24 for 53 (45.3 percent) from the field and limited Old Dominion to 18 for 56 (32.1 percent). The Monarchs committed just 12 as compared to 21 by the winners. However, the Wildcats were dominant on the glass, picking
up 41 rebounds as compared to Old Dominion who grabbed just 31.
Chris Cooper scored six points and grabbed four rebounds early in the first quarter as Old Dominion held an 18-11 lead. The Wildcats however responded swiftly and not only tied the scores at 18, they closed the first half on 9-0
run, capped by Miller’s nine-point spurt, and held a 32-27 lead at halftime.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 40-31 lead early in the second half before Trian Iliadis hit back-to-back shots from downtown to close the gap to 50-49 with seven minutes to go in the game. However, the Wildcats reeled off a 12-3
run late in the period to stun the Monarchs and walk away with the game.
Old Dominion coach Blaine Taylor said after the game,
"I thought we belonged in this game. We thought we could play against this opponent and I think our kids did. I'm not really into moral victories, but I do think our kids gave a good account of ourselves and Old Dominion."
