  1. you will get all the milk before you do any damage to the udder.

  2. Actually, a cow that is not milked can get mastitis (infection in the udder) from the pressure caused by the milk.  on the other hand, leaving automatic milkers on for too long can cause mastitis as well.

  3. ut us not right to milk a cow as yes it can damage the udder, and the milk which we use is made for the calf not for us

  4. Yes it dose damage a cows udder if it is bone dry. But that is a rare condistion. A cow will have to stop its diet and stuff like that.

  5. Yes and no.  When a cow first has her calf, the first few milkings we never take all the milk.  If you do, sometimes they will come down with "milk fever" and you have to give them supplemental calcium to get them to come back around.  After they are done producing colostrum, though, we milk them all the way out.

  6. It doesnt physically damage the utter, though the cow can feel sensations of rape and become extremely depressed.

  7. There is more often damage from leaving milk in a quarter because of a mastitis infection.  We watch closely for indications of a quarter that fails to empty properly for that reason.

Once the cow has expressed the milk into the lower part of the udder, it is best removed.  But our milkers drop off and swing out of the way as the milk flow stops.

When let-down stops, and experienced hand milker will instinctively stop.

When some udders are shaped so that the milker pulls up on the udder as milk flow stops, that can hurt the cow. We know those cows by the fact that the top of the teat goes wider, like a goat.

We never found a solution for that problem with the milkers, so we eliminated cows with that trait from the herd.

  8. When milking a cow with a commercial milker the machine will stop pumping when milk secretion slows. Inside the udder there are glands that secrete the milk(known as milk letdown). There is no physical damage done to these glands if you tried to milk a little more out if you where doing it by hand. Your hands would just get tired.

  9. Put it this way, when you have to go pee, will it damage your bladder or kidneys if you pee until you're plumb dry?  Or should you shut it off before you're empty to leave a little bit to prime the pump?

Your answer is no, it won't hurt the animal.  Unless that is, you're wringing their titties out like a wet washrag in an attempt to get every last drop.  That would probably hurt, much like a purple nurple does.
