Dark Knight question?

I'm not too much of a Batman fan, but I was jus wondering, why is jokers lipsticks smeared over his cheeks?

it resembled a smile. His dad put it there because he(the joker) was to serious and not smiling.

In the movie it said something about how joker's crazy drunk dad got in a fight with his mom, so used a knife to cut joker's face like that after asking "why is everyone so serious?" So, that's why the make-up is like that.

It is just a part of his "persona" - to all those citing the story about dad / wife / etc.  Did you notice that the story changed three times?  It is just a part of the "Joker" identity he created for himself.

to cover-up the scars... there are two versions in the movie wherein Joker deployed his story on how he got his scars... the first one was him telling that his drunkard father incurred him the scars by sticking a blade in  Joker's mouth while telling him "Let's put a smile on that face"..., thus the famous line... "Why so serious?" The second one was self-incurred just to please his beautiful wife who has the same scars... oh well, you be the judge... which is which? Hehehe... the usual Joker-Playing-With-Your-Mind thing... :)

My guess to to cover over his scars since it's part of his "smile" and to give him a more deranged look.

Because in the movie, his dad got drunk and said "why so serious? let's put a smile on that face" and he cut his mouth. And he has scars and puts lipstick to show the smile
