Dark Orchid to build on her handicap debut third in Samvo Betbroker Handicap at Wolverhampton
Stepping into the handicap company worked well for Dark Orchid, who captured the third spot last time. After suffering a couple of horrible Stakes defeats, the Peter Chapple-Hyam-trained made her handicap in August, when finding only a couple too strong
in the Injured Jockeys Fund Handicap at Yarmouth.
Under Ryan Moore, the 3-year-old could not trouble the leading duo, but did well to beat the 4-1 joint favourite, Arrow Lake. Dark Orchid took keen hold early on, and travelled nicely during most part of the event.
However, she did not finish off well, and stayed on same pace in the final 100 yards. As a result, she missed the second spot by 1¼ lengths. Showing such a classy act on handicap debut was surely an achievement.
We expect the filly to build on her fine debut effort, and demonstrate an outstanding performance in Thursday’s Samvo Betbroker Handicap at Wolverhampton.
The class 6 meeting has attracted 13 entries. The race will be run over one mile and 141 yards, and the starting time is 21:10 GMT. The reserved prize for the ultimate champion is £1,704.
Geronimo Chief was disappointing on all three starts in 2011. Ben Haslam’s charge is unlikely to make an impact on his first run for 465 days. Sasheen was below best of late, but a drop in class might boost up her confidence.
Outlaw Torn ran well when second over seven furlongs at Musselburgh last time. It was an improved act by Richard Guest’s trainee, who faced a few terrible defeats early in the season.
In the hands of Declan Cannon, the 6-1 chance took a fine trip, but could not outpace the 9-4 favourite, Twenty One Choice, who eventually stole the show by 1¾ lengths.
Fortunate Bid also deserves some respect following his two very good acts here last month. After ending up third in a close battle in mid September, Linda Stubbs’ 6-year-old perpetuated his good work to seize the second place last time.
According to our calculations, Outlaw Torn and Fortunate Bid have obvious chances. Yet, the bettors should stick with Dark Orchid, who is fully pumped after a fine handicap debut.
