Question:

Dark stains/spots on wood window frames?

I am thinking on renting this nice house in which, unfortunately, the condensation has gone through the double-glass thermal windows and has turned parts of the wood frames dark/black. Is this always mold? If it doesn't smell like mold, is it still harmfull? Please advice if it is worth taking the risk.

  1. It's mold.......

And it can be harmful to your health especially if it is inside the house.

  2. Yes. I would recommend that you remove it, even though the windows are painted, the mold will eventually break down the paint, damaging the wood underneath and causing premature rot. Another reason why you want to remove the mold is to prevent it from bleeding through paint/primer if you should decide to add a fresh coat of paint to the windows. A good way of removing the mold/mildew is to clean it with bleach diluted with water. Put the mixture in a spray bottle to prevent spills. Spray directly onto molded areas and let it sit for 10 minutes. Wash off the bleach with fresh water and a sponge. You want to get all the bleach off because it will have an effect on the paints adhesion. As for health reasons. It sounds like the mold is very isolated and manageable. This is a very common problem in most homes where moisture accumulates.
