Question:

Dark tooth. How to fix?

A long time ago, I broke one of my two top front teeth. Since then I've had two root canals. Multiple times, they have refilled that tooth part. Now, I have my braces off and I've been wanting to whiten my teeth. I did and I need to stop because its beginning to look darker. Its almost greyish. Of course I feel self-conscious so maybe its not too noticable but I think it is because I had forgotten all about the tooth until I whitened it. What can I do? I can't get a cap until I'm 18.

  1. Often times when teeth have had trauma to them, after the root canals they need to be bleached internally to make them look lighter.  The conventional bleaching should help a little, but that tooth most likely needs internal bleaching.

This is when the dentist places the bleach in the inside of the tooth (they make a hole in the back of the tooth, place the bleach in from the back, then put a temporary filling over it).  The bleach is left in for a few days, then is changed.  This needs to be done a few times in order to get it to lighten up; but it usually works very nicely.

If that doesn't get it light enough, like the others mentioned, you may need to get a veneer.

But with the internal and conventional bleaching, you can probably get it to match pretty close.

  2. I suggest tlking to ur dentist to find the best possible way to work with ur specific problem. GOOD LUCK =)

  3. tooth treated by root canal should be crowned as it becomes weaker, but before 18-20 years its not recommended so for color change management u can make laminate cover, follow the link to see it

  4. Go to your regular dentist and see if they'll do internal bleaching, or redo your filling on that tooth. After a while teeth become darker when a root canal treatment was done. Its normal to have had this tooth change color. Let them know you whiten your teeth and if you'll continue because the filling or the crown (cap) needs to be the color you want to whiten to so it won't look odd or noticeable.

    good luck!

  5. I have the same problem with one of my teeth. I have been bleaching my teeth just to help keep the dark tooth whiter. Its been working so far but my dentist told me that it will just continue to darken as I get older. My dentist told me that permanent bleaching can be done to my dark tooth or I could put a veneer on it.

  6. They can put a veneer on the tooth or do some bonding on it to change the color to match your other teeth
