Darnell McDonald shines as Boston Red Sox defeat Minnesota Twins 4-3 - MLB Update
Boston Red Sox right-fielder, Darnell McDonald had a remarkable day with the bat as he went 2-for-3 with an average of .182 and hit two RBIs including a solo homer in the Red Sox 4-3 victory against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field, Minnesota on August
9.
Twins started their first inning well as they took two runs at the bottom of first to get a 2-0 lead. Michael Cuddyer hit a sacrifice fly towards centre-field and Ben Revere added a single run. The second run for Twins was taken by Joe Mauer when Delmon
Young walked, Jim Thome moved to second base and Jason Kubel occupied third base.
The pitchers displayed an overriding act of play from second to fourth inning as they pitched score-less innings. McDonald reached to third base on an infield single during second inning but Carl Crawford and Jacoby Ellsbury both were struck-out without
giving their team a convincing lead.
Similarly, the Twins seemed powerless at the bottom of third inning when Kubel drove a single-run shot towards centre-field while at left-field, Thome flied out and at right-field, Young flied out. At the short-stop position, Cuddyer was thrown out. Red
Sox’ batters levelled the game 2-all during fifth inning by taking two runs.
McDonald struck a two-run homer (394 feet) towards left-field and Jason Varitek scored a tie run for Red Sox. Both teams added one individual run to their score-cards to again tie the game 3-3 during sixth inning. Jed Lowrie posted one run for Red Sox when
Varitek singled off left-field but Crawford got out at third base.
Dustin Pedroia said, “It was one of those do-or-die things where I hopefully get a grip on the ball and flip it toward the plate. But I didn't get a grip on the ball.”
On the other side, Tsuyoshi Nishioka drove a double run shot to deep right-field and Danny Valencia contributed a tie run for Twins. In the seventh inning, Red Sox got a 4-3 lead when David Ortiz reached to pitcher on an infield single and Pedroia added
a tie-breaking run. Adrian Gonzalez moved to third base and Kevin Youkilis occupied the second base to end the seventh inning.
After winning this crucial game, the Red Sox took a 2-0 lead in the three-game series at Target Field.
