Darragh McDonald captures Men’s 400m freestyle gold – 2012 Paralympic Games
Darragh McDonald of Ireland captured gold medal of the Men’s 400m freestyle in S6 category on third day of the swimming events at the 2012 London Paralympic Games in Aquatics Centre on Saturday, September 1.
The Irish swimmer smothered hopes of his challengers in the eight-lap freestyle discipline as he showed his urgency towards the finishing block for gold medal.
With his immaculate efforts, he remained almost 10 metres ahead of his subsequent rival and surfaced on the finishing wall for gold medal by submitting a time of 4 minutes and 55.56 seconds.
The gold medallist was traced by Anders Olsson of Sweden, who stayed 7.88 seconds behind and emerged on the finishing blockade for silver medal by clocking a time of 5 minutes and 03.44 seconds.
Olsson was chased by Matthew Whorwood of Great Britain, who remained almost eight seconds apart and proved his eligibility for bronze medal of the race by reporting a time of 5 minutes and 11.59 seconds.
Fourth position of the discipline was obtained by Reagan Wickens of Australia, who suffered a deficit of nearly 15 seconds from his foregoing finisher and settled on the wall with a timing of 5 minutes and 26.67 seconds.
Wickens was chased by Daniel Londono of Colombia, who stayed two and a half body length slower from him and finished fifth in the event by submitting a time of 5 minutes and 29.13 seconds.
Londono was trailed by Sebastian Iwanow of Germany, who stayed 0.57 seconds slower from upsetting his foregoing finisher and completed his race in sixth place by reporting an effort of 5 minutes and 29.70 seconds.
Iwanow was followed by Adriano de Lima of Brazil, who remained 4.09 seconds apart and finished seventh in the event with a timing of 5 minutes and 33.79 seconds.
Similarly, Lima remained comfortably ahead of Swen Michaels of Germany, who concluded his race in a time of 5 minutes and 37.38 seconds for eighth position.
McDonald expressed contentment after clinching gold medal of the event and said that he would struggle hard to maintain his pace in future.
