Darren Clarke and Lucas Glover surge into clubhouse lead at the Open Championship
Darren Clarke and Lucas Glover smashed a score of four-under-par in the second round of the Open Championship to surge into the lead. The 140th edition of the major is taking place at the par-70 Royal St George’s Golf Club in Kent, England.
Northern Irishman Clarke teed off from the front and awed the entire field with his superb game. He picked two birdies, one eagle and one double-bogey, which left him with a score of two-under-par 33. Marching towards the back nine, the player shared couple
of jokes with the crowd, who were seen passing comments on the players. However, the player wasn’t all smiles on his first back-nine hole.
On the tenth tee, the pressure of the wind increased because of the elevation of the hole. The player did not read the winds well and struck a wayward shot which fell into the rough on the right side. Clarke retrieved the ball safely, but could not save
par and had to sign for a bogey.
With a gap of one green however, the player fired two back-to-back birdies, which shot him straight into the top section of the leaderboard. In what seemed like a see-saw round for the player, Clarke dropped two more shots and gave away the edge that he
barely earned. However, his aggregate score after this round’s 68, meant that the player was still leading the field.
While talking to the press, Clarke said, “It would mean an awful lot, but obviously this is only after two rounds. There's an awful long way to go yet, and I believe the forecast for the weekend is very, very poor, which I quite look forward to. But the
course is going to play very, very tough. If that's the case, then the tournament is still wide open for an awful lot of players, and will be.”
Meanwhile, Glover teed off from the front and wrapped the day with a score of 70. He caught two birdies in the front against a single bogey and wrapped the day at par after bogeying the par-4, 10th.
