Darren Clarke and Rory McIlroy hail the newly inaugurated BMW Masters on European Tour
Two of the most celebrated players on the European Tour, world number one Rory McIlroy and Open Championship winner Darren Clarke have hailed the newly established BMW Masters on the European Tour calendar.
Both Irishmen are fond of the Chinese courses in general and Asian Turf in particular, have regarded the newly inaugurated event as a benchmark in the European Tour calendar.
Formerly known as the Lake Malaren Shanghai Masters, the event is now renamed as the BMW Masters and will be one of the lucrative events on the calendar, all set to lure in heavy weights of the sport in the month of October.
McIlroy, who won last year’s Lake Malaren Shanghai Masters, is eager to win the new event on the schedule and is upbeat about his prospects in the event, given his tons of knowledge for the same.
He said, “I am already looking forward to teeing off at the new tournament. Thanks to the involvement of BMW, the tournament will now be one of the very best events in the world. That obviously makes it all the more exciting to defend my title there”.
Meanwhile Clarke, also one of the blistering players on the European Tour also commended BMW’s interest in the tour and said:
“I cannot praise BMW's commitment to golf highly enough. For years BMW has demonstrated around the world just how close the game is to the brand's heart. Golf would be in a far worse state without the involvement of BMW”.
Clarke was reminiscing his glorious victory on the same course in 2008 and considered it as the turning point of his career which eventually helped him land the first major event of his career.
With the addition of BMW Masters, the tour now has 47 mainstream events on the calendar.
BMW Masters will be played at the scenic Lake Malaren Golf Club in Shanghai from October 25-28, 2012.
This is the third European Tour event which will be comprehensively covered by the automobile maker.
The other two events are the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club in England and the BMW International Open in Germany.
