Darren Clarke plays down any cash flow problems as speculated by his agent Chubby Chandler
Agent Chubby Chandler’s wreckless comment about Darren Clarke’s financial matters he made on Monday, July 25, seems to have backfired at the burly Chandler and Clarke turned down the speculation about his financial woes. The whole episode is bound to create
some attrition between the duo, yielding to a worst-case-scenario of both splitting up in near future.
Chandler had earlier revealed in front of the media about Clarke’s financial problems before the Open Championship and had said that the 42-year-old Irishman was finding it difficult to make two ends meet. Chandler also said that Clarke had multiple investment
portfolios in several real estate projects and was not able to retrieve his money out of those projects resulting in a near-default situation.
Chandler had said, “The timing (of his win at Sandwich) could not have been better. Darren has had a big cash flow problem.”
Clarke, yesterday, came out refuting any claim that he had been facing dearth of finances and said, “Not particularly. No.” still the burly golfer remained tight lipped in order to save the association from a total collapse and added, “I prefer to keep my
mouth shut on those sort of things.”
Whether his last comment was intended as a warning or a suggestion for Chandler is open to individual perception but one thing which has been quite obvious, is that the duo have now switched lanes to a comparatively bumpy ride.
Clarke won a whopping £900,000 prize money from his victory at the Open Championship at Royal St. George’s and another £2-million in terms of endorsements and sponsorship deals he had made with his longtime sponsor Dunlop. Clarke roared into the Killarney
Golf and Fishing Club with his glistening £175,000 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, with a personalized license plate “60 DC”, amply suggesting that the financial woes might have been a part of his previous life.
The Northern Irishman has made some $30-million in the course of his career and has lucrative investment deals in several real estate projects worldwide. He also shares the ownership of a private jet with his countryman and compatriot Lee Westwood. Clarke
has vowed to take up the sport with a brand new perspective after his stellar three-shot victory at the Sandwich.
