Darren Clarke praises caddie for timely support
The newly crowned Open Championship winner, Darren Clarke praised his caddie John Mulrooney for not losing his patience during the tournament and thanked him for his timely support and understanding.
Having been together in seven events, the duo was about to split in the final round of the Open Championship on Sunday, when Clarke lost his cool and had himself involved in an intense argument with his caddie. The argument started as a result of the sudden
meltdown of Clarke in the last round due to increasing pressure.
The Northern Irishman succumbed to immense pressure of the final round - more so considering this was his 20th attempt at lifting the Claret Jug - and faltered in his shot making. This enraged him at several occasions, but Mulrooney came out at the right
time to help his partner calm his nerves.
However, at one instance, Clarke and Mulrooney both lost it, but soon cleared the air after one long discussion.
Much of what Clarke achieved this past weekend can be accredited to Mulrooney’s timely assistance and his ability to calm Clarke down, when it mattered the most. Speaking to reporters after his victory, Clarke thanked his caddie and acknowledged that without
his support, the victory would not have been possible.
“John has been fantastic. When I went to Mallorca seven weeks ago, he was meant to caddie for David Howell, who got injured, and then he was supposed to caddie for Maarten Lafeber and he got injured too. Ricky Roberts was meant to caddie for me but he went
to the induction of Ernie Els into the Hall of Fame, which is fine. I ended up with John working for me, which was wonderful. He's a very good guy, very quiet and a little different, but a very, very good caddie,” said Clarke.
Mulrooney, who has worked earlier with Miguel Angel Jimenez and Jose Maria Olazabal, turned out to be a perfect partner for the Open winner. However, no confirmation was given by Clarke on whether or not the pair would work together in future events.
