Darren Clarke pulls an eagle to grab early lead in the second round of Open Championship
The first-round wonder boy, Tom Lewis has now fallen down the leaderboard after a misadventure in the second round where he fell in for two dreadful bogeys at par-four, 4th and par-three, 6th. The 20-year-old Englishman, who stunned
the field yesterday by finishing for a joint lead alongside Dane Thomas Bjorn, opened up his second round from the front nine for a disappointing start.
The second day of the Open Championship here at Royal St. George’s turned out to be a fine balmy day with the conditions just about right for the players to tackle the sweeping winds. Lewis, who has scored a whopping seven birdies in his opening round, also
had two bogeys to fall back tied for the lead. His score of five-under has now dropped to three-under and is overshadowed by the overnight co-leader Bjorn.
American Lucas Glover, who finished tied for third yesterday, has now soared to the second spot with his even-par performance so far in the morning. Glover pulled in two birdies only to lose them to two bogeys he stumbled on in his front nine. He made the
turn to card a birdie on the 10th and will be hoping to grab the momentum from here onwards.
Webb Simpson, another from the American brigade who finished his first round tied for the third alongside his country mate Glover, fell in for a disastrous double-bogey at par-four, 4th. His overnight lead has now reduced to two-over and it will
be interesting to see how the 25-year-old American will recover from an early disaster.
Northern Irishman Darren Clarke was one of the top performers of the second round so far and pulled in an eye-popping eagle at Par-five, 7th along with two birdies and just one bogey on his front nine. He made the turn and stumbled with another
bogey at the 10th but quickly clawed his way back to card two consecutive birdies at 12 and 13. He is five-under for the moment and has still to tee off for the remaining four holes.
Chad Campbell has already finished his second round, carding an aggregate score of three-under. Campbell carded five birdies and dropped two shots en route to a joint fifth for the moment.
