Darren Clarke ready to make a quick start in 2012 golf season - Golf News
The Open Champion, Darren Clarke, is ready to take on his opponents in his season opening tournament of 2012, the Volvo Golf Champions in South Africa.
Clarke started working with a renowned fitness expert from Belfast, Jonny Bloomfield, prior to the start of his 2012 campaign. He has been working with Bloomfield since Christmas last year.
Clarke decided to link up with the fitness expert after he failed to continue his form in the wake of his Open win.
Bloomfield was introduced to Clarke by Lee Westwood's trainer Steve MacGregor, as he had been suffering from fitness issues for the last five or six months.
MacGregor thought that he could really be helpful in getting Clarke’s form back in a brand new season.
"Jonny's a sports scientist and he's got me doing all sorts in the gym, having my eyes checked out, nutrition etc," Clarke said.
He continued, "Therefore my alcohol consumption is taking a massive dint... currently down to zero! However, no pain, no gain and so, I am very excited about the route that we're going down. It's a long road, but I will give it my best shot".
Clarke had the best of his seasons in 2011. However, the way it ended was not really up to the mark. He should have maintained consistency in his performance to make his season even better.
As said by Clarke, his golf career was extended due to the win in the Open Championship. Now he needs to turn his body into better shape as he failed to produce impressive results recently, due to a similar reason.
He has gained a few extra pounds in recent years which could prove bad for his game.
On the other hand, he has plenty of years ahead of him to participate in the Open Championship.
Therefore, his fitness will decide whether he is able to make his appearance in the upcoming events or not.
Clarke's current plans give him an edge over his past performances. He called himself a "lean, mean, fighting machine" while making a start in this week’s event.
He can be a strong contender in the tournament as he is coming from a long off-season. Intense practice and preparations have helped him regain his lost form.
