Darren Clarke seeks to overcome injury setback at the Thailand Golf Championship
The 2011 Open champion Darren Clarke is upbeat about his chances of winning the Thailand Golf Championship, despite struggling with blisters on his heels.
Clarke knows that the injury will cause him troubles while playing shots on the course. However, the Northern Irishman insists to play through the pain barrier, at the US$1 million event, starting on Thursday, December 6, 2012.
“I have blisters on either heels so I’m wobbling around a little bit. I’m starting to swing the club a little bit better. My feet will be sore but I will be carrying on,” he said.
The Asian Tour event will be staged at the Amata Spring Country Club, which is regarded as one of the toughest golf courses in Asia.
Clarke will make up a total of four major golf championship winners this week. The other major champions include Bubba Watson, Charl Schwartzel and John Daly. They have a combined total of five major championship victories.
Title holder Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia, Arnond Vongvanij, who won his maiden Asian Tour title on Sunday, Ryo Ishikawa and current Order of Merit leader Thaworn Wiratchant of Thailand, will also feature at the Amata Spring Country Club.
Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, Clarke expressed his disappointment in performing poorly throughout the 2012 golf season.
He said that he will try to perform well at this week’s tournament, in a bid to mark a strong finish to his campaign. According to him, a decent finish in Bangkok will boost his morale for the upcoming season.
“My season would be no where near where I would have liked it to be. Such is golf. You work and work but I feel that my swing is in pretty good shape. Hopefully next year will be better than next year,” he said.
He also said that the long-hitters will have advantage over their competitors, and hitting the fairways will be the key to success in Thailand.
“It is in fantastic conditions as per usual but it is playing a little bit longer,” said Clarke, who earned his only Asian Tour victory at the 1995 Portuguese Open.
