Darren Fletcher looking for strong home support for Spain match
Scotland national team captain Darren Fletcher has revealed that he is looking for the Hampden support to roar on his side against World Cup and European champions Spain when the teams meet in a UEFA 2012
European Football Championship qualifying match on Tuesday 12 October.
Fletcher and his team-mates suffered a 1-0 defeat against the Czech Republic in their previous qualifier on Friday, when they lined up in an extremely conservative 4-6-0 formation — which drew heavy criticism
from the fans and Scottish media— in a bid to avoid a loss.
However, Fletcher is hoping to right those wrongs and is convinced that a positive performance, along with the vocal support of the Tartan Army, might just be enough to claim points against La Furia Roja.
"It's important the fans stick with the team. We have fantastic supporters, just look at the numbers who came to Prague and went home bitterly disappointed. But now we have to put on a performance against
Spain so they can see the lads are 100 per cent committed," he said.
'Important that fans get behind us'
"If we are going to go forward as a team, it is important the fans stay with us and get behind us at all times. We're not going to go toe-to-toe with Spain . . . but we have to look for opportunities to
get forward.”
The Manchester United midfielder added that it was important to put in a strong performance to boost the spirits of the Scotland fans and condemn the loss against the Czechs to history.
He said that: "It's important we go out and put in a good performance for the fans. Win, lose or draw, if they can see 100 per cent and see the Scotland team give their all, I think that's important. We
have to forget what happened in the Czech Republic and use all of our energy and commitment in the Spain game."
His plea to get support from home fans, and the massive task of facing the Spanish juggernaut, suggest they might be going for another defensive strategy.
