Darren Lockyer finishes his Rugby League career on a high note
The Australian skipper, Darren Lockyer, ended his stellar Rugby League career in style with a massive 8-30 win against England in the Gillette Four Nations Final. The final showdown of the series was staged at Elland Roads, Leeds on Saturday, November 19.
The final was played amid a packed house, which supports a total capacity of almost 34,000 spectators. The tickets were sold-out by Thursday, which had forced the Four Nations’ organisers to release extra 500 tickets, ahead of the match. However, the tickets
were all gone in a matter of few hours.
After that there was no further release of tickets by the authorities but the waiting list continued growing prior to the match. Campaign organisers confirmed on Thursday that over 1,000 people were enrolled on the waiting list.
The house-full Elland Road Stadium featured score card break up of 6-8 at the end of the first half of the game, where the series’ favourites, Australia, had established an early lead by initiating the score through Sam Thaiday’s try. Meanwhile, their English
contenders also had fought back well as they held back Roos from widening the score gap. English side’ Ryan Hall ran in a try towards the end of the initial half of the game.
Both the sides were not very active during the early part of the game, which is also apparent through the scores.
However, the situation did not remain the same during the second-half, as the Australian side geared up to cement their superiority over the opposition. They continued increasing the score as Jharal Yow Yeh, Greg Inglis and Johnathan Thurston scored tries
for their side.
This was not all. Thurston displayed his full form, by helping his side to a total of five goals. His overall contribution played a major role in boosting his team to a massive win. The match was similar to a 2009 win at Elland Road against the same opponents.
This win was very important for Australian skipper because this way he has ended his career at a higher note by scoring the last goal for his side.
