Darren Lockyer signs off from his rugby league term on a high note
The 2011 is the year that will always be remembered in the world of rugby league because Darren Lockyer, the Australian rugby league legend decided to hang up his boots bidding his farewell to Brisbane Broncos after guiding his side to magnificent wins one
after the other.
The Australian veteran has appeared for a total of 355 National Rugby League (NRL) games, 59 Tests and 36 Origin matches in his elaborate 17-year stay as high profile rugby league ace. He is bowing out of the world of rugby league after savouring every possible
mood and platform offered in the world of rugby league. He also skippered the Australian National team, Queensland State of Origin team and his hometown club since 1995 Brisbane Broncos.
He is well known for his on field brilliance, which has been studded with awards and accomplishments of various types. His long list of acknowledgements also rates him maximum for the highest number of games and tries to his credit as a captain at the Australian
national team.
In addition, amongst his multiple feats, he will be recalled for being the highest point-scorer for Broncos, where he scooped three grand finals with the Broncos along with a Clive Churchill Medal. He was also filled in as the full-back at the Queensland
team of the century. He also had the World Cup and the Golden Boot Award for world's best player to his name.
Lockyer’s successful run in rugby league also boasts his fourth grand final triumph for his hometown club. He also scooped six successive State of Origin series with Queensland.
His long stay at the club featured him almost everything to anything and could not have been a more perfectly timed exit when he had scooped up wins the same year which had seen him pick up commendable honours to his name. He bid farewell to his Broncos
fans at his final match at Suncorp Stadium after playing his last game at his club.
As has been quoted by a website about the departing Brisbane great who is leaving on a high note, which said, “He even went out a winner with the Broncos, kicking a field goal in golden point extra-time against St George Illawarra in the Brisbane semi-final
despite having his cheekbone shattered 11 minutes earlier in a collision with teammate Gerard Beale.”
