Darren Sammy, Lendl Simmons & Kirk Edwards: 5th ODI - West Indies v Pakistan – Highlights - Part 2
While Mohammad Hafeez and Ravi Rampaul were the two star performers on the day, they were by no means the only ones. Hafeez’s 55 run innings would later be overshadowed by a match winning 77 runs from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/LMP-Simmons-c1843 and Ravi Rampaul was supported well by
Darren Sammy who took three wickets himself.
Staying with the performers of the first innings, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/R-Rampaul-c2233 took. The West Indies skipper followed Rampaul’s lead and sent struggling Pakistani
batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ahmed-Shehzad-c42359, back to the pavillion after 15 overs. Pitching the ball up, Sammy beat Shehzad all ends up and sent the bails flying as the batsman failed to get any kind of contact with delivery.
Sammy then dismissed http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Misbah-ul-Haq-c1972 in the 23rd over when his delivery had the batsman trapped leg before wicket. Misbah had been one of the most consistent batsmen in the series and was instrumental in Pakistan’s win in the 3rd ODI,
so the wicket had definitely been a crucial one.
Yet, the captain’s most significant contribution came when his delivery bowled Mohammad Hafeez, who was the only batsman who actually threatened on the day. Hafeez was on 55 runs when Sammy did the damage and the wicket pretty much sealed the innings as
no other batsman could put together a noteworthy innings.
Ending with figures of 10 overs bowled, three wickets taken at the cost of just 30 runs, Sammy had been more economical than the star of the show, Ravi Rampaul and played a vital role in exposing and taking advantage of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755’s batting frailties.
Lendl Simmons and Kirk Edwards’ 140-run opening partnership
The http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 opening pair of Lendl Simmons and Kirk Edwards put on an impressive, albeit simple, batting display and took their team to a second successive One Day International win. Needing 140 runs to win from 50 overs, the task for the two batsmen
was not as daunting, yet it still needed a calm and composed display.
The batsmen went about the chase as polar opposites. Simmons opted for an attack minded and offensive approach, going after the bowlers, while Edwards went for a more sober and consolidated knock.
Scoring 77 runs off 73 deliveries, Simmons was the more entertaining of the two West Indies’ batsmen as his strike rate of 105.47 would suggest. Punishing the lack lustre Pakistan bowling attack for seven boundaries and 3 massive shots for sixes, Simmons
was in devastating form.
Already having made a name for himself as West Indies’ most consistent batsman in the ODI series so far, Simmons finished as the highest overall runs scorer, leading Pakistan batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mohammad-Hafeez-c76898 by 12 runs, at 279 runs in five matches.
Alongside him was http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kirk-Anton-Edwards-c71510 who made his first real contribution in the series so far. His 40 run knock was his best as the Windies batsman had often faltered in all the previous matches. Having seemed to recover from his slump, the in-form Edwards put
in a solid performance, which if nothing else will help his confidence and morale for the upcoming test series.
While Simmons was going after the bowling attack, Edwards was content with rotating the strike as the pair took their side to their second win of the now concluded five match ODI series.
