http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 captain Darren Sammy conceded that their top-order collapses was a cause of concern and hinted at recalling Shivnarine Chanderpaul when they play
Pakistan in the first quarterfinal of the ongoing ICC World Cup 2011 on Wednesday.
The Windies captain said that the veteran batsman has not been in the best of nicks in the past few games however he added that he has started batting well in the nets and may make the playing eleven against Pakistan.
“He has continued to work in the nets,” told Sammy the media reporters. “We still respect what he has done and we have full confidence in him. His opportunity may come in the quarter-finals. We have not counted Chanderpaul out of the
XI. He has a big part to play still in this World Cup.”
The 36-year-old veteran batsman has performed on a number of occasions during his 16-year-long cricketing career but the left-hander was left out for the games against
England and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 after struggling in the first four matches of the tournament.
Batting has been a cause of concern for the Caribbeans throughout the ongoing World Cup so far, particularly against big teams. The departure of openers sparks a slump that sees the side losing the middle order and lower order in no
time.
The Windies failed to capitalise another chance of defeating a big team on Sunday. While chasing 269 to win against
India in the last league match of Group B, Sammy’s men were well on course to a victory at one stage when they were 154 for 2. But after Smith’s departure in the 31st over for 81 runs, none of the West Indian
batsmen could face the Indian attack as the side lost its last eight wickets for just 34 runs.
“It's (batting collapse) a worrying thing for us but I still back the calibre of players we have, once we put our heads down and play each ball on its merits,” said the all-rounder.
Sammy said that they cannot afford any such collapse in the upcoming games as one more such performance would send them packing from the high-profile tournament.
The dynamic West Indies batsman, Chris Gayle is also battling an abdominal strain. When asked whether the belligerent opener will play against Pakistan, Sammy reckoned Gayle would not miss the opportunity to play in the quarterfinals. He
hoped he will play on Wednesday and will give his all for the team.
