Darren Sammy hopeful of a good show in World Cup
It isn’t hard to be good from time to time in sports. What’s tough is being good everyday. The West Indian cricket team has been one of the most dominant forces in the history of cricket and under the captaincy of Clive Lloyd; the team has won the first
two World Cups that were played in 1975 and 1979. The team lost its winning ways after that and have struggled in the recent past.
The current West Indian captain Darren Sammy has asked the players to take inspiration from the former greats of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760. The team had enjoyed the glorious days in the 70’s and 80’s but failed to continue its dominance after that.
Sammy was hopeful that his team would be able to come out of the tough times and perform in the coming World Cup in 2011. He said, “It is every cricketer's dream to play in a World Cup. It is a very prestigious event and has a rich history. As a team we
have had our times in the past especially under Clive Lloyd. It's important that we use all that West Indies has done in its history to motivate us to go out and do well. It's been a while since we won an ICC World Cup, ICC World Twenty20 or any other ODI
prize. This could be our turn.”
Sammy was named as the West Indies captain before the Sri Lankan series and all the Test matches played ended in a draw. The ODI series was also postponed because of continuous rains.
Sammy said that he had talked to the West Indian legend Clive Lloyd about captaincy and has taken some useful tips from the legendary player. He also said that he would talk to Viv Richards before the World Cup to get an idea of how to cope with pressure
situations.
Regarding the captaincy, Sammy said that he felt honoured to captain the West Indian team and representing his team in the World Cup would be something special for him. He said that the players have supported him fully to accomplish their cause and he is
hopeful that his men will be able to repeat history which was written by Clive Lloyd and his team.
The conditions in the subcontinent will also be useful for the West Indian players and the team does have some powerful hitters who can change the course of the match. The players like Chris Gayle and Keiron Pollard have the might to take advantage of the
conditions and then some players like Shivnaraine Chanderpaul and Sarwan can steady the innings for the team.
Sammy said that the goal of the team would be to make it to the semi-finals. He said, “The last time we made the semi-final was in 1996 under Richie http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Richardson-c85395. This time apart from getting into the second stage, our objective is to get to the semis. From
there on it will be down to our self belief to win the World Cup.”
Sammy is very much confident of a good show in the upcoming World Cup and he also rates the series against Sri Lanka as very important. He believes that the series will give their team a good practice ahead of the World Cup.
The West Indian team will be the only team alongside http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 to play matches in the subcontinent so close to the World Cup and Sammy considers that to be a blessing in disguise for the team.
It will not be an easy task for the West Indian team but they do have the talent and potential to surprise everyone in the Mega event. A good show in the World Cup would definitely be beneficial for the country and it will give an opportunity to the team
to relive its lost glory.
