Darren Sammy lauds good start but slams bad end in 2nd ODI against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750
The dejected West Indian skipper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Darren-Julius-Garvey-Sammy-c52468, has expressed his disappointment over his team’s second consecutive batting failure in the ongoing One Day International (ODI) series against India.
Team India thrashed Sammy and company comprehensively by seven wickets (D/L method) in the 2nd ODI at Port of Spain, on Wednesday, June 8, 2011.
Having been asked to bat first on a sluggish Oval wicket, the Windies got off to a brilliant start as two out of four top-order batsmen hit half-centuries.
The http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kirk-Anton-Edwards-c71510 started off the proceedings on a great note by scoring 57 for the first-wicket stand.
After Edwards’ exit, Simmons shared the good work with the number-three batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ramnaresh-Ronnie-Sarwan-c83880, and the two right-handers put together a classy 67-run partnership.
While Sarwan and Simmons went back to the pavilion after hitting their fifties, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Marlon-Nathaniel-Samuels-c74804 smashed an aggressive innings of 36 runs and steered the West Indian score to 175 after 36 overs.
However, the Windies could only manage to reach 240 in the allotted 50 overs due to a terrible batting collapse in the final overs.
In response, the Indians achieved the revised target of 183 without any bother, thanks to an outstanding batting show by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/V-Kohli-c2737 who won the ‘Player of the Match’ award for his 81.
Sammy admitted that his batsmen failed to make the full advantage of an excellent start and scored around 30 runs less than the desired total.
Sammy said, “We put ourselves in a good position but we didn't capitalise in the end. We were about 30 runs http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Short-c90107. We rotated the strike better but we didn't get one of the top batsmen to bat through.”
"Samuels has been out for a while but we saw how well he was batting. Sarwan is also stabilising the middle order for us. We can't fault the effort of the bowlers; they've been doing their job. Hopefully, In Antigua, we'll have a better surface for us to
play our style of cricket," added the 27-year-old skipper who added 22 runs to the total.
Sammy, meanwhile, hoped for a better performance in the next ODI, scheduled to be played at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua, on Saturday, June 11, 2011.
