Darren Sammy needs more consistency from top order – Cricket News Update
Following their 0-2 defeat in the extended-overs leg of Australia’s tour of the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DJG-Sammy-c1382, has pointed out that the lack of consistency in the performances of the top 6 batsmen cost their side dearly.
The Windies went into the series as underdogs, having failed to win a series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 since 2000. However, they surprised their visitors by adopting a fighting stance, and even dominating play at various stages during the tour.
The ODI series, for which the tourists (fresh from their Commonwealth Bank series victory) were favourites, ended in a draw, with the hosts at a 2-1 advantage before the Aussies bounced back during the very last match to equalize.
The T20s held a similar fate for Michael Clarke’s men – after having secured an 8-wicket victory in the first match, they were denied a series win as the Windies claimed a 14-run victory in the next fixture.
With the limited-overs leg proving that both sides were equally balanced, the tour boiled down to the Test series. However, after a solid start, which saw them in a dominating position during the first three days of the first Test, the Windies faltered and
were unable to carry their momentum through to the end, and it was a similar story in the remaining two Tests.
Referring to the top order’s lack of consistency, Sammy observed that their side had been unable to establish a substantial base.
“The top six is where we should get the bulk of the runs," Sammy observed. "Shiv [Chanderpaul] batted really well for us again but we didn't have consistent contributions from everyone there.”
The young opener, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kieran-Omar-Akeem-Powell-c71441 was similarly unimpressive, with 40
being his highest score throughout the series, while http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DM-Bravo-c1386 scored just one 50.
“We have youngsters at the top and like Shiv said, they're learning their skill at the international level,” Sammy pointed out. “With more experience hopefully things could get better.”
Veteran http://www.senore.com/Cricket/S-Chanderpaul-c2390, who went on to win the Player of the Series award, remained the only hope for the Windies' batting order, contributing score such as 103, 94, 68 and 69. However, his individual scores were not enough to enable the Windies
to secure any victories.
