toured West Indies and a 2nd string team played against the Asian side, losing both Test and ODI series.
The issue was over player contracts, and not for the first time the team and board were at loggerheads. The problem, however, was later resolved but after effects did linger on.
The latest news from West Indian cricket is that Chris Gayle once termed as an inspirational leader of men, has been sidelined and the energetic all rounder Darren Sammy has been handed the captaincy for the tour of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758.
The West Indian cricket board made the announcement as they revealed the squad for the tour of Sri Lanka.
"We are at the dawn of a new era in West Indies cricket and the selection committee has entrusted the challenging job of captaincy to Darren Sammy because it is believed that he has demonstrated the attributes of a leader of this diverse group of men", said
selection committee chairman Clyde Butts.
Chris Gayle, who became the team captain back in 2007, has been retained in the team but not as captain. The left handed all rounder Branden Nash has been named the deputy for Sammy for the 2 Test matches.
Dr. Ernest Hilaire, WICB chief executive said that Chris Gayle took on the job when West Indian cricket was going through a tough time and the board and fans are thankful to him. He went on to say that the time is right for a change, and the board is looking
to the long term future.
The CEO of WICB said that Sammy is the right man to take the job for the long run and the team would be going through a rebuilding stage for a while.
Now the West Indian board has not officially given a reason for taking the captaincy away from Gayle, but there have been strong reports of rifts between the board and Gayle over team selection and central contracts. Details are still sketchy and Gayle has
been quiet, but once the whole issue surfaces the left hander may be the one pulling the short straw.
Currently looking at the Test rankings, West Indies are on 7th place and are on 8th in the 50 over format of the game. That is not flattering at all if one considers what position the West Indian team used to hold in international cricket.
On the other hand Darren Sammy seems very excited and optimistic about his new role. Sammy said that it is a proud moment for him, and he would do all he can to give his team his all and give it his highest regard.
Sammy said that he had been leading his Windward Islands team and being a captain is not something new to him. However, he admitted that leading a domestic team and leading the national team are two entirely different things, but he added that he has enough
confidence in himself and his team to go on and achieve big things.
Sammy said that whenever he has played for the national team, he has always given it his all and would continue to do so. Sammy went on to say that being the captain does not put more pressure on him but in fact gives him more reason to perform for his country.
He admitted that the challenges awaiting him are not at all easy, but with proper planning and hard work his team would be able to lift themselves once again.
