Darwin Airport Resort Territory Stingers, OAMPS Queensland Blades win opening day matches in AHL
Darwin Airport Resort Territory Stingers and OAMPS Queensland Blades emerged victorious over OAMPS Southern Hotshots and WA Thundersticks respectively, in the opening round contests of the Australian Hockey League played in Darwin, Australia.
In the first game, Darwin Airport scored two goals against the single of their competitors and improved their position in the league.
Both the squads commenced the game quite maturely and tested each others’ defences in the very early minutes of the first half.
The pace of the game further increased when Travis Carroll of Darwin Airport scored the maiden goal of the game in the 7th minute and established their early lead. Following that the two teams started their fast and furious game, as one wanted
to level the score, while other wanted to continue the lead.
Both the teams continued their efforts against each other. The scoreboard changed when Adrian Lockley doubled the tally in the 27th minute of the game to put Darwin Airport ahead in the way to success. The first half of play concluded with Darwin
Airport hanging on to a two-goal lead, 2-0.
In the second half of play, the attackers from Southern Hotshots came alive and started attacking opponent side with zest and zeal. Ultimately, Jacob Webster managed to take the ball into the defensive circle of Darwin Airport and struck a powerful shot
that touched the back of the net smoothly. However, it was the only offence strike from them in the game and they failed to bring anymore goal. After an end-to-end play, the Darwin Airport team won the game by a single goal, 2-1.
In the second game of the day, OAMPS Queensland Blades edged past WA Thundersticks by two goals, 3-1 at the same venue.
It was quite interesting competition, as both the sides demonstrated splendid show onto the field. The opening period was filled with lot of attacks and counter-attacks, but to no avail. The defenseman from the duo squads denied all efforts of either side
until the 25th minute of the match.
Matthew Gohdes took the control of the ball and made a lengthy run towards the downfield to execute a well-organised shot that moved swiftly into the goal-post. It was the only goal from both the sides in the first half.
With start of the second half of play, Queensland and Thundersticks started serious efforts to score a goal. Craig Smith nailed a couple of goals in the 64th and 68th minutes to expand the lead up to three goals. Grant Schubert did
score an effort-less goal in the dying seconds and lost the game at 3-1.
