Darwin Barney shines as Chicago Cubs defeat Milwaukee Brewers 1-0 – MLB Update
Chicago Cubs’ second baseman, Darwin Barney had a notable day with the bat as he was the only player who scored a single run right throughout the game and went 1-for-4 in the Cubs’ 1-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field, Chicago on June
13.
The pitchers started well as they delivered curveballs and restricted the batters from scoring any runs. At the bottom of the first inning, Jeff Baker was struck-out swinging and Barney lined out to second base.
The batters missed scoring opportunities and got out at various field positions. The pitchers remained on top from the first to the seventh inning as they did not permit any run during this span.
The starting pitchers from both teams went score-less on their respective pitches. Ryan Dempster did not permit any runs on four hits and had seven strike-outs. He pitched with an ERA of 5.48 and gave just one walk on his 109 pitches.
The Cubs’ manager, Mike Quade commented on Dempster and said, “That's one of the toughest (decisions) to pinch hit for Demp, he's throwing so well. You take your shot to get him his win there, but we didn't do it.”
On the other side, the Brewers’ starter Randy Wolf was also impressive with the ball as he threw seven innings with an ERA of 3.20 and did not allow any run on six hits. He was able to strike-out seven batters and did not permit any walk on 98 pitches.
The Brewers were scoreless at the top of the eighth inning as Jonathan Lucroy was struck-out swinging and Rickie Weeks grounded out to second base. Barney scored the first and final run of the game at the bottom of the eighth when Aramis Ramirez hit a grounder
towards second base. The Cubs were leading 1-0 after the eighth inning.
Quade was delighted on the Barney’s effort and said, “We needed an unbelievable slide from him. He got a great jump, great slide.”
Lucroy said, “He made a good slide. A little hook slide around me. He just got his hand in there.”
No score was contributed in the ninth inning as the pitchers maintained their line. Carlos Marmol and Jeff Samardzija also played a crucial role in their team’s victory as they did not permit any run on their combined two inning pitches.
