Darwin Barney’s triple RBIs help Chicago Cubs defeat Washington Nationals 10-9 – MLB Update
Chicago Cubs’ second baseman, Darwin Barney had a notable day with the bat as he went 3-for-5 with an average of .296 and had three RBIs in the Cubs’ 10-9 victory over the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park, Washington on July 7.
First two innings passed score-less for both the teams as Kosuke Fukudome singled to left-field but Starlin Castro flied out towards centre-field and Carlos Pena struck-out swinging at the top of the first inning. Similarly, the Nationals’ batters also failed
to put runs as Rick Ankiel fouled out to first base and Ian Desmond struck-out swinging at the bottom of the second inning.
The Nationals’ batters have managed to post seven runs in the third inning and took a 7-0 lead. Danny Espinosa singled off right-centre while Livan Hernandez and Roger Bernadina both added the first two runs. The last five runs during the third inning were
taken by Ryan Zimmerman, Espinosa, Michael Morse, Jayson Werth and Ankiel to end the seven-run campaign.
Zimmerman further raised the Nationals’ lead 8-0 by scoring a single run in the fourth inning when Ankiel doubled off deep right-field. In the fifth inning, the pitchers stopped the scoring shots of the batters. Matt Garza was expensive for the Cubs as he
pitched just two innings with an ERA of 4.26 and allowed seven runs on eight hits including six earned runs. He was able to strike-out four batters and gave up only one walk on his 67 pitches.
The Cubs opened their scoring account in the sixth inning by blasting six runs and reduced their lead 8-6. Aramis Ramirez, Geovany Soto, Marlon Byrd, Alfonso Soriano and Barney each singled while Blake DeWitt homered (359 feet) towards right-field to finish
the six-run sixth inning. The game was tied 8-all during the seventh inning when Carlos Pena struck a solo homer (389 feet) to right-field and Ramirez contributed one run.
During the eighth inning, both teams scored one individual run to their score-card but the game again levelled 9-9. Castro posted a single run for the Cubs while Bernadina hit a tie run to keep the Nationals alive. In the ninth inning, Barney doubled to
deep right-field and Tony Campana added the tie-breaking run to give the Cubs a 10-9 lead.
The Cubs avoided their sweep against the Nationals in a four-game series and ended it 3-1.
