Darya Samarchants stuns Lucie Cerna in Women’s Singles quarter-final at Slovak Open 2012
Darya Samarchants, an upcoming player from Ukraine, extended her winning streak on court and surged into Women’s Singles semi-final after showing exit to her higher ranked opponent Lucie Cerna of Czech Republic in quarter-final showdown at Victor Slovak Open 2012 in Slovakia, on Saturday, September 8.
The impressive Darya, who started as an un-seeded player in the event, showed tremendous performance as she overpowered her higher ranked rival Lucie in a thrilling contest that took the best from both contestants.
Un-seeded Ukrainian player was in fabulous form as she convincingly took the first game but lost the second one. Nevertheless, she controlled her nerves at the crucial stage in the final set and won the battle with a dramatic margin in three games.
Third seeded Lucie, on the other hand, could not dictate the terms in the match as she remained struggling to take over the control. She put in her best effort to dominate the pace of rallies but failed to cope up with the mounting pressure at the crucial stage and eventually crashed out with a respectable margin on the board.
Opening game was absolutely fantastic when the lower ranked Darya put up staggering show and took a superb lead on the board until the one-minute break.
The Ukrainian shuttler continued showing up her elevated craft after the break as she played with precision all the way to finish up the set with a 21-16 figure on the board.
In the second set, both shuttlers were at the same level as the higher ranked Lucie played better badminton this time and remained ahead until the end of first half.
After the break, Darya tried to stop the progress of her opponent by increasing her speed but she failed to dictate the pace and lost the set with a margin of 17-21.
The deciding game was breath-taking as both shuttlers remained toe-to-toe from opening points to the concluding phase of the set and reached at 22-22.
At this nail-biting stage, Darya showed her brilliance and grabbed two consecutive points to snatch the set with a tight margin of 24-22.
Darya finished off this Women’s Singles quarter-final fight in 48 minutes with a thrilling score of 21-16, 17-21 and 24-22.
