Darya Zevina pockets Women’s 200m backstroke gold – FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup
Darya Zevina of Ukraine pocketed gold medal of the Women’s 200m backstroke on day one of the 2012 FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, October 2.
Zevina faced tough battle from Melissa Ingram of New Zealand throughout the race but with her relentless efforts, she managed to occupy gold medal of the event.
The Ukrainian swimmer remained just one arm-stroke ahead of her following swimmer and stepped on the medal rostrum for gold medal by clocking an effort of 2 minutes and 05.01 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by Ingram, who stayed 0.21 seconds behind and transpired on the finishing end as second position holder by producing an effort of 2 minutes and 05.22 seconds.
Ingram was followed by Katinka Hosszu of Hungary, who reached the podium for her fourth medal. Hosszu remained two and a half body length behind and tapped the wall for bronze medal by reporting an effort of 2 minutes and 07.67 seconds.
Hosszu was followed by Jenny Mensing of Germany, who remained almost 1.50 seconds behind and settled on the wall as fourth fastest swimmer by producing a time of 2 minutes and 09.16 seconds.
Mensing was followed by Zsuzsanna Jakabos of Hungary, who was 0.25 seconds slower from her following swimmer and tapped the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 09.41 seconds for fifth position.
Sixth spot of the race was obtained by Jordis Steinegger of Austria, who remained 6.55 seconds behind and clocked a time of 2 minutes and 15.96 seconds for sixth position.
Similarly, Steinegger remained 3.29 seconds faster from Ana Grgic of Croatia, who was unable to upset her preceding swimmer and finished seventh in the race by posting an effort of 2 minutes and 19.25 seconds.
Grgic was traced by Anouque Berghuis, who stayed two and a half body lengths behind and posted an effort of 2 minutes and 21.81 seconds for eighth position.
Furthermore, Zevina was happy with her gold claiming effort in the discipline and stressed that she would try to continue the same in subsequent stages of World Cup.
