Daryl Impey wins the second stage of the Tour of Basque Country
Daryl Impey of GreenEdge Cycling Team registered his first season win during the stage two of the Tour of Basque Country 2012.
He finished the race in a fastest time of 4 hours, 10 minutes and 7 seconds and overcame his team-mate Allan Davis after a close encounter.
Davide Appollonio of Team Sky, Jose Joaquin Rojas of Team Movistar and Michael Matthews of Team Rabobank claimed the third, fourth and fifth positions in the respective order.
Team GreenEdge is enjoying a terrific start to its campaign with as many as seven victories in the young season.
It has already grabbed the overall victories at the Santos Tour Under, Milan-San Remo and the Volta a Catalunya.
The Australian side has secured stages at the Volta a Catalunya and the Tour of Basque Country and Impey’s victory has marked a perfect start for the World Tour debutant side.
The cyclist was happy with his first overall victory at the race, "I didn't come into today's stage expecting to win. We were riding for Allan [Davis]".
"When I found myself with the gap, I decided to take it. The boys worked so well early in the race and held it all together in the sprint. It's a massive victory - definitely the biggest moment in my career," he concluded.
The second position holder, Davis briefed after the race, “It was one of those situations where experience prevailed," said Davis, who sprinted in for second place”.
Thibaut Pinot succeeded during the first five mountain stages of the race while Evgeny Petrov claimed the sixth climb of the race.
Daryl Impey, Allan Davis and Davide Appollonio were the top three cyclists in the point’s classifications.
Stage 1 winner, Jose Joaquin Rojas of Team Movistar finished at the fourth position and maintained his lead in the overall classifications.
The Spaniard is holding the top spot after the stage 2 classifications with Daniele Ratto, Fabian Wegmann and Daryl Impey claiming the next three positions.
Team GreenEdge is currently leading the team’s classifications with Vacansoleil-Dcm Pro Cycling Team and Team Liquigas-Cannondale at the second and the third positions.
