Daryl Morey talks about franchise players, picking Jeremy Lin and his favourite for the NBA title – NBA News
Daryl Morey has had an interesting and busy offseason as the General Manager of the Houston Rockets. Morey was one of the most active General Managers during free agency, and made quiet a few changes to the Rockets roster in an
attempt to make them better and get them closer to becoming a playoff contender.
Morey added Omer Asik from the Chicago Bulls and Jeremy Lin from the New York Knicks while parting ways with Luis Scola, Goran Dragic and Kyle Lowry. His free agency decisions will be tested when the Rockets open their regular
season in a few weeks time, but Morey recently did an IAMA on Reddit Friday, which is a kind of question and answer session, and had a lot of interesting things to talk about.
Morey was asked about the Rockets pursuit of All Star Centre Dwight Howard during the summer, when he was looking for a new team, and the general requirement of a franchise player in the NBA of today. The GM agreed with the fact
that in the NBA of today, teams cannot expect to win an NBA title without at least one All Star level player, and said that the Rockets ultimate aim through all their trades and deals since the departure of Yao Ming have been to land a franchise player.
Stemming from that answer was the natural question about the signing of Jeremy Lin and if he though Lin could rise to become a franchise player for the Rockets.
“We were rolling the dice on getting Jeremy Lin but taking smart risks is what we have to do up and down the roster on every move. As only 1 team out of 30 gets to win, you cannot play it safe. We have won more games than we lost
the past few years (beaten our peers) despite losing our franchise player Yao Ming and it has been appropriately considered disappointing despite the fact that most teams win around one-third of their games after losing their franchise player,” said Morey
in reply.
Morey was also asked who he thought was the most dominant team in the NBA at this moment, and sided with the Miami Heat, saying that ever since LeBron James and Chris Bosh moved to South Beach to team up with Dwyane Wade in 2010,
he has maintained that the Heat are the most dominant team in the NBA. Easy to deduce that Morey will be siding with the Heat to win the NBA title once again this season.
