Daryna Zevina and Maksym Shemberev secure titles in Lima: 2011 FINA World Junior Championships
Day five of the 2011 FINA World Junior Championships got off to a flying start with the thrilling splash of Daryna Zevina and Maksym Shemberev in Lima, Peru, on Saturday, August 20. The final session of the meet conducted Women’s 50m back-stroke and Men’s
400m Individual Medley events.
In the Women’s 50m back-stroke final heat, Daryna Zevina of Ukraine took home the gold medal on the podium by posting a winning time of 28.45 seconds. After the scintillating swim, Zevina said that she was really contented and pleased with her splash. In
the corresponding race, Kathle Emma Saunders of Great Britain earned silver medal of the platform by submitting an impressive time of 28.76 seconds and Landeghem Van of Canada captured bronze medal with a mark of 29.01 seconds.
Hazal Sarikaya of Turkey was placed fourth in a time of 29.12 seconds, while Olivia Smoliga of United States of America settled fifth with an impressive mark of 29.20 seconds. Camille Gheorghiu of France was placed sixth in 29.22 seconds and Mathilde Cini
of France earned seventh place honours with a time of 29.36 seconds. Yekaterina Rudenko of Kazakhstan was placed eighth in a time of 29.37 seconds.
On the other hand, the Men’s 400m Individual Medley crown was taken over by Maksym Shemberev of Ukraine with a winning mark of 4 minutes and 15.64 seconds. Xiang Li of China took home the silver medal on the podium by posting a victorious time of 4 minutes
and 17.00 seconds, while Kosuke Hagino of Japan earned bronze medal of the platform by submitting an impressive time of 4 minutes and 17.15 seconds.
In the corresponding swim, Josh Prenot of United States of America was placed fourth in a time of 4 minutes and 18.44 seconds and Ian Matthew Johnson of Great Britain earned fifth place honours with a mark of 4 minutes and 18.54 seconds. Chase Kalisz of
United States of America finished sixth in a time of 4 minutes and 23.78 seconds, while Alec Page of Canada earned seventh place honours with a mark of 4 minutes and 24.67 seconds. Last, but not the least, Brayden Salmon of Canada was placed eighth in a time
of 4 minutes and 27.87 seconds.
The arena applauded for the impeccable swims of all athletes, while the winners were awarded accolades after the session’s completion.
