Daryna Zevina wins Girls 50m back-stroke semi-final: Day four – 3rd World Junior Championships
Daryna Zevina of Ukraine won the semi-final of Girls 50m back-stroke meet on the fourth day of the 3rd World Junior Championships, organised by the Federation Internationale De Natation (FINA) on Friday, August 19, in Lima, Peru.
Zevina lowered the championship record of the back-stroke sprint, by submitting a phenomenal time of 28.60 seconds. Her time was 0.23 seconds faster than the old championship mark of 28.83 seconds, set by Grace Loh of Australia in 2008. Nonetheless, the
Ukrainian swimmer was 1.54 seconds above the world record of 27.06 seconds, made by Jing Zhao of China in 2009.
The Ukrainian swimmer reported on the finishing wall 0.49 seconds earlier than her following competitor, Olivia Smoliga of United States, who entered the final round with a second fastest qualification time of 29.09 seconds. Smoliga managed to out-touch
her closest competitor, Hazal Sarikaya of Turkey, with a difference of only 0.02 seconds, whereas, Sarikaya earned the third fastest spot into the final, with a timing of 29.11 seconds.
For the fourth fastest spot of the swim, Camille Gheorghiu of France stayed only 0.06 seconds behind her preceding swimmer and concluded her swim in a time of 29.17 seconds. Gheorghiu escaped her subsequent swimmer, Emma Kathleen Saunders of Great Britain,
with a margin of just 0.01 seconds, as Saunders ended fifth with a timing of 29.18 seconds.
In the meantime, Chanta Van Landeghem of Canada emerged as the sixth fastest swimmer to make her way to the final round, by posting a time of 29.21 seconds. Van Landeghem was trailed by Mathilde Cini of France, who remained just 0.06 seconds away and clocked
a seventh fastest qualification time of 29.27 seconds. The final qualification spot of the event was secured by Yekaterina Rudenko of Kazakhstan, who completed her sprint in an eighth best time of 29.32 seconds.
The arena cheered the commendable swims of all participants after the completion the meet, while these contestants will face each other in the final round to earn a place on the medal rostrum.
